Growing rose plants from the stem is one of the ways to propagate the rose plants, which includes a selection of stem, preparation, proper soil, watering, Fertilizing, winter dormacy. If you take care of all these there are more chances your stem will grow as a plant.

I faced many problems when I am growing from rose plant stem, stem rot, no roots, and many others. So I followed these procedures/ steps which works out for me every time.

Finally, here are the steps I followed to grow a rose plant from the stem.

1. Selection of Stem For Growing a Rose Plant

The stem taken for the growth of the new rose plant should be flexible and make sure the stem is semi-hard. If you take Hard stem and not flexible roots won’t give new shoots according to my experience.

Make sure the branch or stem is taken should be the thickness of pencil with the diameter of 5 mm and the stem as to be at least 6-8 inches long which contains around four to five sets of the leaf.

Take a good height stem to grow well (at least 6-8 inches).

2. Preparing Stem

To prepare the stem for insertion the stem is taken to be cut directly which is above the highest bud and make sure the lowest bud is cut slantly.

The lower set of the leaves is to be removed completely, leaving three-four sets of leaves that are in the upper set of the stem.

Before putting in soil dip the stem in rooting hormone for better growth of roots.

Many people suggest putting stem in potato, or to use honey, or using turmeric instead of rooting hormone. But I always used rooting hormone.

I also tried on honey and turmeric combination it didn’t go well with my plant.

3. Preparation Of Soil Or Dirt

Take a small pot with the rooting mixture which contains the mixture of peat or pertile and sand.

You have to insert the pencil into the soil reaching up to 1 inch above the base level. Later remove the pencil.

Use well-drainable acidic soil, potting mix, or cocopeat for the selection of soil for the container.

This will surely help the germinated small plant to grow well.

Use cocopeat instead of soil for small plants to grow better.

4. Dip In Rooting Hormone For Better Root Growth

To get better results for the fastest growth using the stem is to place the rose stem cuttings into the rooting hormone powder.

This rooting hormone powder helps in the stimulation of the growth to the root and helps in natural growth as the rooting hormone contains synthetic auxins.

5. Exposure to Sunlight

Keep it in shade and give only 3-4 hours of sunlight exposure for better growth.

You can keep this in the greenhouse for better growth.

If you cannot give enough sunlight you can give artificial light as an alternative.

6. Watering

The watering process as to be done before placing the rose cutting into the soil.

Once the rose cutting is placed into the soil then there is no need of watering it again.

The water is to be completely dried before watering it again. The water supply should be less during the winter season as the plant becomes very dormacy.

If the rose plant is overwatered then it may die.

In the summer season make sure you water the plant every two to three days.

In the spring season watering the plant once a week is more sufficient.

7. Duration To expect New Growth

The pot has to be now placed in the polythene bag or with the help of a zip lock bag and it has been tied properly in the top end.

The rose-cutting starts to develop new buds around ten to twelve days after placing it in a pot and it has to be placed in the shade.

The pot as to be placed in the shade for few weeks until the new growth of the root and stem has to become firm in the soil.

8. Fertilizer For Rose Plant

I recommend using organic fertilizer as it will work on improving soil organically by worms(Vermicompost), organic materials like animals, or plants that are better for the environment. These have so many different nutritional advantages and can be used to feed to your rose plant (also support beneficial microbes).

Compost promotes the overall growth of plants, helping roses to be more resilient to pests and diseases. Mix into the soil while planting the plant or apply 1-2 layers each spring around the base of established plants.

We can buy the compost from online stores like amazon or offline in nurseries.

3. Manure

Manure can also be mixed with soil while planting the plants or once it is well established we can mulch the layers of manure so that nutrients will reach roots when we water the plants.

It is better to manure in the spring and make sure manure is well-aged so that it won’t burn your rose plants.

4. Bone Meal

Bone meal can be applied in spring as a slow-release fertilizer for the rose plants. it will have an effect through the growing season again fall to promote root growth and for next years flowers to bloom well.

5. Kelp meal or sea weed

Kelp meal or seaweed promotes root development and boosts the plant’s immunity to pests or diseases caused by insects. This fertilizer we can use throughout the growing season.

6. Fish Fertilizer

Fish fertilizer is used with the combination of kelp meal and this encourages the plant to grow lush green. usually applied every 3 weeks to get most of it.

7. Coffee extract

The coffee extract can be used to sprinkle around the base of the plant at any time during the growing season for boosting the nitrogen. Coffee is acidic, so soil PH may be adjusted with lime or other alkaline sources.

8. Cottonseed meal

Cottonseed meal boosts overall plant health, apply only once in 6 months this is slow releasing fertilizer effect throughout the growing season. It is acidic in nature so soil PH may be adjusted with lime or other alkaline sources.

9. Epsom salts

Epsom salts promote bloom color and green foliage, more vigorous growth on the stem. Apply it in spring to make full use of it.

we can say Epsom salt is not alone fertilizer, we can give Epsom salt with fertilizer to enhance the nutrients for the plant.

Epsom salt is an easily available house and its common name is magnesium sulfate. It has Magnesium and sulfur in it.

Epsom salt helps the plant to increase chlorophyll production and helps to restore green leaves (If leaves are suffering from other problems, dry).

The rose plant affects very badly for winter dormacy, we need to go extra mile for taking care of the rose plant.

The growth rate of the plant will be reduced in this winter dormacy.

It will resume its growth in summer again.

Reduce the watering frequency and quantity in winter

Don’t Fertilize the plant in winter.

Try to keep rose plant near windows to give more sunlight.

Tips:

  1. Soil pH changes absorbtion of nutrients and should be between 6.0-7.0. Test your soil with soil testing meter to determine if its needs adjustment. Then you can choose right amendment to level the pH level
