How Deep To Plant Pothos Cuttings?

Pothos [Devil’s Ivy] is one of the most common plants in house plants. To multiply or for propagation first, we cut the pothos plant just below the node and keep in water for root growth or plant it directly into the soil.

pothos plant

we need to plant pothos around 2 inches below the soil. If you are taking cuttings from water that has already roots then make sure to bury roots in the soil. After potting make sure you water fully until water comes out from the bottom of the pot to help the plant to establish itself in the new environment.

I always grow my cuttings first in the water container, later once I got some roots, I will replant them in the soil (pots).

we can keep pothos inside the house or outside. For faster growth grow on the ground than pot.

I always followed these steps to plant pothos cuttings.

1. Select a healthy pothos vine for propagation.

For propagation first, we need to select the pothos vine for propagation by looking for healthy, bright green leaves. This plays an important role as if we take unhealthy vines then we won’t be able to propagate them successfully.

We should not take for propagation if they are brown, yellow and dull. Check the vines sometimes near the node we can see the root growth. Those kinds of vines are best suitable for propagation.

2. Cut the pothos just above the node for proper propagation.

Now you selected the proper stem which has 3-4 inches and 2-3 leaves. Make a cut just above the node (where aerial roots are grown). This helps the plant to establish and makes it successful cutting for propagation.

Once you made the cutting place it in clean water or in the soil where you bury the plant at least 1.5 to 2 inches. depends on the size of the cutting.

I always make a proper 45-degree cutting when cutting the stem. If you kept plant in water then after a few weeks you will see the roots in the stem.

3. Use Proper tools for cutting pothos.

Use a cleaned pruner to cut the stem otherwise, it may be affected by another plant that was cut before.

use a disinfector and clean with a clean cloth before you make a cut.

4. Grow the pothos cuttings in water before planting in soil.

I always prefer to grow the pothos in water until they grow the roots, once the roots are grown we can easily transfer the pothos to the pot for further growth.

we can easily the root growth after weeks of keeping pothos in water.

I always follow this method which works very well for me. Don’t overcrowd the pot as well because the roots of the pothos will be crowded in the pot.

we can also skip this step and directly plant the pothos in the soil. But I prefer preparing pothos in water to grow in soil.

If we don’t want to grow pothos in soil and we also keep the plant in water for as long as we need. Just we need to change the water regularly.

5. Use Rooting Hormone to increase root growth.

I always use rooting hormone while transferring the new pothos stem to the soil. First, I will drop some of the root hormone powder into the new stem and the place where I am planning to transfer and bury them in the soil.

We can also use natural rooting hormones like honey, and turmeric powder instead of industry-prepared ones.

6. Good Potting Mix for pothos.

I always prefer a good well drainable potting mix for any pot. Make sure the pot has drainage holes to pass the water.

If you don’t use good potting mix then it leads to many problems. Water will stay near the stem and roots of the pothos and cause root rot.

Root rot is one of the major problems we see in pothos. because roots were crowded in the pot. if the water stays for a longer time it affects the plant faster.

Scales and other pests attack easily to plants if there is more water sitting for a longer time.

7. Make sure you bury all the roots in the soil.

When you transfer cutting from the water when the roots are already grown in water, you need to make sure to bury the roots in the soil.

Try to bury all the roots in the soil to help the plant grow faster.

If you don’t see any roots in the cutting or need to plant the pothos directly in the soil. Bury at least 1.5-2 inches of the stem inside the soil. This helps the plant to grow its roots well.

8. Water thoroughly after planting in soil.

After planting the cutting into the soil. water thoroughly until the water comes out from the bottom drainage holes. This helps the plant to settle in the new atmosphere.

Water thoroughly the pothos instead of watering them less and more frequently. Pothos likes to grow fast when it is outside and when it gets adequate sunlight and water.
